WFH on a different perspective!
Being in Pharma IT, March end 2020 was eventful one as we have been asked to work from home due to Lockdown measures announced by Central and State Governments. Initial days, due to job nature I have to keep visiting our company locations to continue pushing mission critical projects.
Since Pharma comes under essential services, I have been scot free by Police personnel during initial days. But commute back to home was always uncertain with crawling traffic and chaos.
This made us to stay put at home and it started new episode of WFH for past 6 months. Initial days, I was loving it as we save on travel time to office and back home. The meetings were done on Teams, Zoom and Webex. The lock down made kids to stay home and they started attending virtual classes. Gradually as a parent I had lost control on screentime of kids, the iPADs were always booked and kids started watching their favourite cartoons and kids movies.
The thin line between personal time and office time greyed out, pre-covid times the CFTs(Cross functional Teams) and other teams will hesitate to schedule meetings after 6 Pm or during Saturdays. Due to WFH all this personal time fencing gone for a toss, the meeting schedule started to galore even after 6 pm and started occupying Saturdays too.
Kids also started to take it for granted and intrude during a call and request to play with them(Many times during a Top escalation calls). Adding to my horror, some times they even attended teams call from my Boss and super boss. The time schedule for school, office and personal time was totally disrupted.
Gyms were closed and stuck inside gated community for smaller strolls of walk & jog. Overall Fitness took a hit(backpain started as there was no chai/coffee break when at work) and waistline started increasing. Binge watching of Netflix and Amazon Prime started to feel boring.
Forced to stay with spouse 24 hours, started with petty fights but I know her more than ever now(hope same for her too). Actually the family bonding increased over a period of time.
Initial days of WFH fanned the interest of clearing online courses, even that interest started dying down.
Heights of frustration came, when my mom asked to help plucking spinachs, cutting veggies, as I am just idle(Just speaking on phone) and doing nothing at home…
WFH in a nutshell:

- Started learning new features in car
- Liked new look by having WFH beard and moustache
- Used Zoom to connect longtime friends (Inspiration from WFH)
- Completed reading long pending books

- Office Furnitures like Chairs and Tables sales shot up
- Real Estate biggies started adding Office Room as part of their Layouts
- UPS sales shot up to avoid frequent power disruption to wifi connection
- Only Veggies Flea market, Fruit shops, Pharmacy and Kirana(Grocery shops) done decent business.
- PGs were closed, many young employees migrated to home town.
- Too many Tolet boards in our surroundings. Rentals flattened.
- Designer Masks started featuring, and separate line of COVID related accessory business started flourishing.
- OEMs and Partners started calling for Free Webinars, actually its been overdone nowadays.
As my super boss used to say, WFH is new norm we dont know when we can go back to pre-covid way of working. Until then relishing lighter moments and taking the life as it comes.
With Luv,
VJ
