Its a personal choice and reason given is to take care of aging parents, which is a noble one. The decision has pros and cons, as there is a general saying "the other side of the grass is always greener". Since this is written as a blog and comments are open, I think its fair to comment.
I was in same boat when my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. After a long stay in ME, moved my base to India. My kid struggled a lot with the change and as a family we struggled a lot with this transition. Financially it was a huge hit, even with decent savings.
Pls set your expectations very low when you are moving back to India on below areas:
1. If you are going to work as an IT professional/or an employee. The work life balance in India doesnt exist. Your boss may expect you to extend your stay on daily basis and work on weekends without complaining.(If you get a good boss, you are lucky, mostly work-life balance is very poor in India)
2. You can have a decent life style being a salaried person, but you cant save money as you did in US.
3. Income Tax, GST, Tolls and Fuel pricess will eat-up almost half of your earnings.
4. Cost of living/Inflation had increased multi-fold, it will be hitting you hard as a person who lived abroad for long and returning back.
5. Quality of Life cannot be compared with US or other Developed countries. The hygiene in public spaces, daily commute to office & quality of food items(Adulteration) etc.
6. Infrastructure has improved in India (highways connecting cities), but during monsoon and natural calamities, life will be standstill in Urban areas. Disaster management is still left to people here.
7. You will end up spending more in visiting relatives and friends. You may feel happy on living a 'life', but it comes with a cost.
8. Kids schooling - Education has become a thriving business in India. Good rated schools are costly and still Indian education system is a rate race. Now the exra-curicular stuffs added as additional burden to kids. The wholistic approach of growing kid into a pleasant adult having decent life skills is still missing.
9. Pollution- Almost all cities are polluted irevocably. People like you returning back to urban areas, will feel this. It will have huge impact on general health.
10. Digital payments: It has pros and cons. PayTM & Gpay has transformed our lives in India. Benefits outweigh the disadvantages. But be mindful on securing the transactions(OLX and 99Acres scams are prevalent). Its a old school thought, but I feel the digital payments make us spend more when compared to hot cash.
Above are few pointers, which came through my mind immediately.
All the best for this transition and hope you can adapt and thrive in India.
